In the movie Being John Malkovich, puppeteer Craig Schwartz and pet store clerk Lotte Schwartz are dissatisfied with their lives and marriage. Craig takes a job as a file clerk at LesterCorp, where he discovers a hidden portal that allows people to enter the mind of actor John Malkovich for fifteen minutes. Craig becomes obsessed with the portal and its implications for the meaning of life.

Lotte also enters the portal and begins to question her own identity after experiencing life as Malkovich. Craig confides in his coworker Maxine, who sees an opportunity to make money by selling trips into Malkovich's mind.
