In Venice, California, Kelley Tanner and Jonas Trumball are homeless teenagers who live on the beach and spend the day using drugs, drinking booze and... shoplifting to survive. One day, Jonas overhears a conversation in a parking area between a woman named Evelyn and her housekeeper, and Evelyn tells that she will travel for one month with her husband David and she gives the alarm code to her servant. Jonas sees the chance to rob the house and brings Kelley with him. Kelley is in need of family love since she was a foster girl that left her foster house to live on the streets, and she spends the days watching the home videos of Evelyn, David, their son Michael, who has a poster of "The Kid" in his room, and their deceased daughter Stephanie. But Jonas is interested in robbing as much as possible to start a new life in Mexico. He meets a dangerous criminal to fence the jewelry and the Porsches of the family. But the family returns and Kelley and Jonas need to flee from the house. When Kelley is wandering on the streets, she stumbles upon a movie theater that is showing Charles Chaplin's "The Kid". She buys a ticket and realizes that she is alone in the theater; out of the blue, Michael enters the theater and sits near her. Squatters is a 2014 drama film set in Venice, California, that tells the story of two homeless teenagers, Kelley and Jonas, who live on the beach and resort to drug use, theft, and shoplifting to survive. One day, Jonas overhears a conversation between a woman named Evelyn and her housekeeper, where he learns that Evelyn and her husband will be away for a month and the alarm code is shared with the housekeeper. Seeing an opportunity, Jonas convinces Kelley to join him in robbing the house.

Kelley, who longs for a sense of family love since leaving her foster home, spends her days watching home videos of the family she is about to rob. However, Jonas is driven by his desire to start a new life in Mexico and intends to take as much as possible from the house. He contacts a dangerous criminal to sell the stolen jewelry and Porsches of the family.

During their robbery, the family unexpectedly returns, forcing Kelley and Jonas to flee. Kelley finds herself alone on the streets and seeks solace in a movie theater showing Charles Chaplin's The Kid. There, she encounters Michael, the teenage son of the family she tried to rob. As they spend time together, Michael falls in love with Kelley, who conceals her past from him. But soon, Kelley is haunted by her actions, and the consequences of her choices threaten to unravel their newfound connection.
